How to Get Rid of Drain Flies

  • Step 1: Clean the AC drain line and pan
    • Turn off the AC unit.
    • Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any clogs or standing water from the drain line.
    • Flush the drain line with a mixture of hot water and vinegar to kill flies and break down organic buildup. You can also use boiling water for a strong initial flush.
  • Step 2: Address remaining flies
    • Create a trap by combining apple cider vinegar, a drop of dish soap, and warm water in a shallow dish. Place these near drains, and the flies will be attracted to the scent and drown.
    • For active infestations, consider using a commercial drain cleaner or an enzyme-based cleaner designed to break down the organic material that drain flies feed on. Always follow product instructions carefully.
  • Step 3: Prevent recurrence
    • Regularly clean the AC drain line with a vinegar and water mixture.
    • Reduce indoor humidity, as this is a major factor in drain fly breeding.
    • Call an HVAC professional for regular maintenance, especially if you have persistent problems.
